Xavier Institue of Social Sciences (XISS) students from the Human Resource Management department organized an experimental interaction on training and development among the non-teaching staff under the guidance of training and development professor Dr Shayamal Gomes.
The students have been taught a Japanese technique named Kaizen, which means continuous improvement and this technique aims at building a culture for creation of organizational behaviour at all levels, starting from the administration and non-teaching sections.
“We have gathered here to interact, play games and primarily know our non-teaching staffs that include the administration, front office, canteen, security, library, cleaning and maintenance departments. So, we have invited two staffs headed by the supervisor from each of these departments for an introduction session. We also want to educate them on the 5S method of training and development that helps to make any organization well-organised. After the training session, we will be assessed by our Professor Gomes and we will know how we fared well on the experiment,” said Nelson Chacko, a final year Human Resource Management Student.
Dr Shayamal Gomes explained the 5S method of training and development of human resources. “The 5S are Short (Seiri in Japanese), Short in Order (Seiton), Shine (Seiso), Standardise (Seiketsu), Self-discipline (Shitsuke). In the first step, Short tells us to differentiate the necessary from the unnecessary, in the second step Short, we should prioritise the necessities. Then, comes, shine that stands for cleanliness and fourth step is to standardize, which means one organization would strive to build and maintain its standards. Finally, comes Self-discipline, which stands for building and creating the attitude of oneself that will ultimately, reflect in the organization as a whole and help its growth,” said Dr Gomes.
Meanwhile, the non-teaching staff seemed to be enjoying the experiment while they happily played interactive-games with the students at the training hall. “We really appreciate the students’ efforts and realize that even we are quite important in running an established institution. The motto of this programme was—zero defect, zero loss, zero accident. We are hoping to implement the same in our daily routine to deliver better in our services,” said Babloo Kumar, a canteen staff at XISS.
