Xavier's tests too tough to crack for Inter toppers?

Published on:

Getting admission in institutions like the St Xavier’s College remains a far fetched dream for majority of Intermediate toppers, especially those from the Arts background. Despite appearing in the entrance examination for undergraduation in the college few toppers were lucky enough to be shortlisted.

“I secured around 30 out of 100 marks in the entrance exam and was not selected even in the third list notified by the college. While, there are students who scored four or five marks but were chosen. With no other option left, I and my batchmate Gulafshan Parween who was the third state inter commerce topper took admission in B.Com at Ranchi Women’s College,” JAC State Inter Commerce topper Rani Tarannum said on Tuesday. Tarannum had scored 83.6 percent in the intermediate exam.

Similarly, JAC State Arts topper lovely Sinku was denied admission in this college. “I am not aware why I was not admitted in Economics department. I met HRD Minister Geetashree Oraon today. She has assured to help me in taking admission in St Xavier’s College. I have always wanted to study in this

college,” Sinku said.

According to sources, State’s third and ninth Arts topper Goldi Bhagat and Julia Minz were fortunate to get admission at the last moment.

On July 21, some of the student union members had met Ranchi University’s Vice Chancellor Dr lN Bhagat on considering the admission of state board’s toppers.

Compared to previous years, Inter students under JAC have performed better. However, the cut off list of St Xavier’s College on the basis of marks obtained in entrance examinations has made it difficult for local inter pass outs to grab a seat in this college.

Bhagat is supposed to hold a meeting with college principals regarding increasing of seats at undergraduate level. On the other hand, few groups are ready for launching a protest on Sinku’s admission denial.

Meanwhile, getting a scope to study in the other renowned colleges of Jharkhand remains a hope for last academic session’s inter toppers. JAC State Science topper Debopriya Shukla of Pakur created a history in JAC by scoring 89. 4 per cent. JAC after more than a decade had been able to mark an appreciable performance in the Inter science result.

Shukla aspired to pursue her graduation in BIT Mesra’s Computer Science Engineering branch but could not get a seat since there is no provisions for direct admission of state inter toppers in local

colleges of Jharkhand.
