Women take the lead in household industry work

Published on:

When it comes to the household industry, women certainly rule the roost in Jharkhand. The fairer sex is not only good in managing domestic work, but is also more productive than men.

According to Census-2011, of the total workforce in Jharkhand, 2.7 per cent (2,25,475) males and 4.9 per cent (2,29,687) women are household industry workers.

Interestingly, rural Jharkhand is mostly dependent on household industry, rather than urban Jharkhand. There are around 4,55,162 workers engaged in household industry — 379,354 in rural and 75,808 in urban areas.

Residents of Deoghar, Sahibganj and Pakur are more dependent on household industry that the rest of Jharkhand, with 43,179 in Sahibganj and around 19,471 in Pakur.

A higher number of people are engaged as agricultural labourers in rural areas compared to urban and this highlights that jobs in remote areas of Jharkhand are only a six-month affair.

As many as 44,36,052 residents in Jharkhand belong to the category of agricultural labourers — 43,39,302 in rural areas and 96,750 in urban.

Census-2011 counted agricultural labourers and household industry workers as marginal worker. It defined marginal worker as someone who has worked for 0 to 6 months in a year.
