A woman passenger was injured when her dupatta got stuck in escalator on platform no 3 at the Tatanagar Railway station on Wednesday morning.
The incident took place at around 10: 30 am when the passenger identified as Avantika Sarkar, after coming from the Howrah-Barbil Janshatabdi Express was trying to step into up-bound escalator. Suddenly, her dupatta and belt of the purse got stuck in one of the stairs of the escalator. Trying to pull the dupatta, she fell and sustained injury on her right hand wrist.
“I am in a state of shock and don’t even know what happened. I think the mishap took place as area around the head of the escalator was overcrowded as the train had just arrived on platform no 2. While trying to climb the stairs through the crowd, my dupatta first got stuck, trying to pull it out the belt of the purse also got stuck in the stairs. There were 20 passengers on the escalator," said Sarkar, an official of a Kolkata based private hospital. She had come here to attend a free health check-up camp organised at the Telco Gurudwara.
Meanwhile, the Chakradharpur railway division started an investigation into the matter while the service was not disrupted due to the accident
The A1-category Tatanagar Railway Station on August 28 added another unique facility. The passenger-friendly project, which would help elderly, had missed three deadlines in the past. The installation work of the escalator began in July last year and was expected to be completed in December that year. The escalators have been imported from China. The escalator project at Tatanagar Railway Station is estimated to cost over `1.5 crore.
Platform No. 1 will be equipped with an escalator (or moving stairways ) , a lift and a ramp. Platform Nos. 2 and 3 will have ramps while the rest two platforms -- 4 and 5 will have the facility of a lift and a staircase. The total project is estimated to cost over `2 crore. Tatanagar, the second busiest station of South Eastern Railway, will be the second to boast the escalator facility. Howrah station in Bengal, the busiest on the South Eastern Railway network, has escalators connecting its old and new complexes. The facility was introduced in 2011.
