Disappointed by failure to secure job on compassionate grounds a 25-year-old woman tried to commit suicide near Rashtrapati Bhawan on Thursday afternoon. The woman, Sumkumari, was trying in vain to get job in a CIl subsidiary in Jharkhand after the death of her father, Ram Singh, in 1989. Sukumari is reported to be out of danger.

According to sources, she was around two years of age at the time of death of her father hence ineligible for job under the rules governing job on compassionate ground.According to rules of the PSU, only a male surviving child who is 12 years of age at the time of death of his father is entitled for a job on compassionate ground provided he reaches the age of 18. There is no rule which makes minor females entitled for a job on compassionate grounds.

Sources also revealed that the woman had filed a petition in High Court seeking its intervention in the matter however the court had reportedly rejected the petition. At the time of the incident around 1.30 pm, she was carrying a letter which was to be submitted to the PSU. She insisted on meeting President Pranab Mukherjee. Incidentally, Sukumari, who hails from Hazaribagh district, had attempted suicide outside the PSU’s corporate office in Ranchi in 2011 as well.
