A villager in Bokaro district got multiple injuries when a wild elephant attacked him. The villager was rushed to hospital where his condition is said to be critical. According to the eyewitness, Fakir Manjhi (45) a resident of Jhuggidih village under Jaridih police station went out for nature’s call at 6 am near a  river bank on Monday.

A heard of the wild elephant was there but Manjhi failed to notice them. Suddenly one elephant from the herd lifted Manjhi with his trunk and forcibly tossed (put him down). The elephant repeated it (air lifting and down) for 4-5 times, resulted into multiple injuries to Manjhi, said Santosh Manjhi,  another eyewitness. Santosh along with others were also there for nature’s call.

later with the help of villagers Manjhi was rushed to Jaridih Government hospital where doctors referred him to Bokaro General Hospital (BGH). Beside multiple injuries Manjhi got critical injuries in his head, hospital authority said.

The terrors of the wild elephants are not new for this region; regularly elephants enter into these regions of Jharkhand from the Roriya forest, the border area of Purilia and Jharkhand.

The regions of Kasmar, Jaridih, Peterwar, Gola and Ramghar also known as the ‘elephant corridor’— the migration root of the elephants in Bokaro district. A shrinking habitat (forest) has forced elephants to raid farmlands and villagers have been encroaching upon forest land to build homes, increasing the man-animal conflict in the Jharkhand.
