Weeklong drive to streamline traffic begins today

In yet another effort to standardise the traffic system in the State capital and to create awareness among masses, traffic police from December 1 will conduct a checking drive. People not carrying their vehicle pollution papers especially will be penalised.

The checking drive will continue till December 8. Earlier, too such drives and initiatives are taken by the traffic police department.

“We take such initiatives to check and create awareness about traffic norms and regulation among the public. Still many people even the educated masses break the traffic rules regularly. We can only initiate things but public need to implement those norms and regulation to maintain proper traffic system,” said Traffic DSP, Dilip Khalkho.

Regular campaign are conducted every year by traffic police to penalise individual who often break traffic rules while driving two wheelers without helmet, driving with triple load or using tinted window glass in cars.

“Traffic department along with the transport department and regional transport office (RTO) will conduct the drive in which traffic police will verify other valid documents along with the pollution certificate,” Khalkho added.

Citing details about the data available with the traffic police department on pollution certificates presently Khalkho said, “Presently we do not maintain any data specifically on the vehicle pollution certificate. We keep a combine record with us.”

However, there are also people who are not aware on how and where to approach for pollution clearance certificates approval.

A traffic constable deployed at MG road said, “When we conduct a checking drive, it is very common to find that most of the residents have all the documents like driving licence, registration paper with them except the pollution paper. Many individual give this plea that currently they have not got the pollution papers upgraded and hence they are not carrying it.”

Notably, motorists are supposed to carry pollution certificates along with other essential documents when driving. In April, Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) had decided to install pollution checking equipments at several places which would instantly examine the pollution levels but unfortunately no steps towards this is taken so far.
