The changing weather condition and early summer may affect the Rabi crops cultivation in Jharkhand. As the weather pattern is constantly changing, experts believe it is the effect of western disturbances (WD) along with the global climate change and moreover, the present climatic condition is not competent for Rabi crops growth. Temperature being one of the major parameter for the germination of plant saplings, it may hamper vegetation in the near future.
“Temperature variation is major factor and plays pivotal role in growth of crops. The constant change in climate will affect the crops in the state as everything is dependent on the weather condition. If past few years trend is considered, it is noticed that winter season is getting over early. However, the winter season should start from November last week and continue till January 15, as this time period is favourable for Rabi Crops,” informed met expert at Birsa Agricultural University, A Wadood.
Citing details about the prediction pattern, Wadood further added, “Prediction pattern is constantly changing which also creates problem in analyzing the situation. Constant efforts are being made to analyze the weather condition, so that the seasonal change does not hit the farmer in the worst way. Though droughts, heavy rainfalls, hail and storms and other similar weather condition are forecasted but it is not cent percent valid.”
Moreover, if present scenario is to be considered WD along with the north western weather condition has affected the stipulation of Jharkhand. “There is set temperature for germination of plants almost in every season. Minimum temperature should be around 10 degree celsius or even below whereas maximum temperature should be 20 degree or below, if it varies then it will influence the growth and development of Rabi crops and plants,” Wadood added.
The present situation, also gives a hint that there is a constant change in weather pattern. “The temperature should have dropped more in the month of January but unfortunately it is not happening. El-Nino is influencing the weather condition. However, the WD is constantly hitting but its intensity is less when it reaches Jharkhand. Apart this north western condition is also not favourable,” asserted Forecast officer of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Ranchi, Upendra Srivastava.
Stating about the prediction pattern, Srivastava further added, “There are 16 set parameters on which the forecast is made. However, all the set 16 parameters are variables. Accuracy is maintained and whatever predictions are made since 2010 are 90 per cent correct. Prediction also depends on use of modern technology, presently we are lashed with basic equipments only which sometimes do create problems. Forecast need to be improved especially when droughts, cloudy day, hailstorms are considered. ”
