A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Ranchi Municipal Corporation’s (RMC) ambitious solid waste management (SWM) project will be handed over to it by next week. According to Deputy Mayor Sanjiv Vijayvargiya, preparation of the DPR for the project was at its final stage, which was likely to be handed over to the RMC by next week.
Essel Infra Projects limited is to begin waste collection in the State capital from May 1, ten months after it received the letter of Intent for the same.
“After the submission of DPR, its value will be checked and the company will start the project work after getting the approval from RMC. Initially, the system will start working in 13 of the 55 ward areas of Ranchi,” said the Deputy Mayor. Setting up of the processing plant, however, will take some more time as a relaxation of two years has been given for the same, added the Deputy Mayor.
“Till then, the garbage will be dumped at Jhiri which will be burnt to ashes. A rate of `1950 per tonne has already been fixed for the same,” said the Deputy Mayor. However, identification of land for setting up of transfer stations is on the verge of completion, he said.
“Identification work of transfer stations by Essel Infra has almost been completed, which will be intimated to the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) within 10-12 days. The garbage disposable plant project will come into shape only after the approval for the same is granted by the RMC,” said Public Relations Officer of RMC Naresh Prasad. As soon as the company hands over the DPR, a final estimate for the project could be determined, he added.
Sources in Essel Infraprojects were also of the view that the project will take at least two years to come on ground as they are still at DPR stage and the work will be started only after getting approval from the RMC.
According to the officials of Infraprojects, waste collection will go as earlier with a slight change in the technology. The 400 vehicles used for garbage collection will be equipped with Global Positioning System to track their movements. Sweepers of Essel Infra will also be provided distinctive uniforms so that they could be identified from a distance.
Routes for garbage laden trucks are also to be decided by Essel Infra which will be fitted with Global Positioning System, having monitoring system at the RMC so that proper monitoring of the garbage laden trucks could be done centrally.
They further added that garbage collected from all the over the city will be gathered at 19 transfer stations proposed to be set up at ITI bus stand, Khadgarha, Ratu Road, Rock Garden, Morhabadi, Edalhatu, Bariatu, Khelgaon, Kantatoli Chowk, line Pond, Ranchi lake, Harmu, near Radisson Blu, Namkum, Hinoo, Chandni Chowk, near Hatia police station, MECON and HEC areas.
Each of these stations will be equipped with 3 to 4 trash compactors to reduce the garbage in volume and weight. Several mobile compactors will also be deployed across the city. It will be then transported to Jhiri to be processed at the upcoming waste-to-energy plant.
