Waste collection kicks off sans NGOs

New waste management work finally started in the city on Friday. Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) after cancelling the agreement with the NGOs who were authorised replacing A2Z with its own team had commenced the work of waste collecting from the State capital.

RMC CEO Manoj Kumar said, “The work of waste collecting from the State capital has started and within a couple of week the work will pick up pace.” Under new system, the civic body will supervise solid waste management through ward councilors who will monitor supervisors and labourers in their respective ward. Moreover, it is has been decided to provide atleast one tractor in small ward and double the number in big ward.

“As per the requirement of the ward civic body has decided to provide the tractor,” added Kumar. He further added that he himself will keep a close eye on the waste management team and for this conduct a monthly review. Interestingly, RMC has also adopted the A2Z waste management method. The labourers will collect waste from individual houses and localities from the respective ward and dump it at a common point. Further the dumped garbage will be carried to waste treatment plant situated at Jhiri. Meanwhile, RMC has decided to pay the labourers wages equivalent to that of A2Z. “No changes have been done regarding the wages of the labourers. What they use to receive earlier will be maintained. However, there are chances of increasing their wages in the near future,” said Kumar.

However, Kumar also ensured that the work of waste management will not be stopped on the ground of manpower crunch. He said, “RMC had a word with A2Z laboures and are ready to help the municipal body in keeping city clean. We ensure that in future no complain will be registered regarding failure of waste management team.”
