Vehicles sell in State without temporary registrations

Despite having well-defined rules that no  vehicles  can be delivered to the customers without having a registration number on it, vehicles are being sold out in Jharkhand without even getting a temporary registration numbers.

Sales executives of motor vehicle dealers in Ranchi said that it takes at least three days to get the temporary number from the District Transport Officer (DTO) Office following which it is provided to the vehicle owners.

“As per the rule under Motor Vehicle Act, a dealer cannot deliver unregistered vehicles to the customers. The dealer shall first get the vehicle registered in the name of customer and then hand over the vehicle to the customer,” said Ranchi DTO Nagendra Paswan. If an un-registered vehicle is found plying on the road shall be liable to be prosecuted under MV Act, he added.

“As a request is made by the dealer to the DTO office for issuing temporary numbers, it takes around 2 – 3 days in processing,” said the DTO. It is valid only for a month after which there is a provision of slapping a fine of Rs 5000 if someone is found plying on the road with temporary registration number, he added.

The dealer however, is issued a trade certificate by the Transport Department to drive the unregistered vehicles up to the zonal office for registration purposes only, said Paswan.

Sales executive of a renowned four wheeler showroom also asserted that at it takes at least three days to get a temporary registration.

“Although we apply online on the same day for temporary registration number, it takes at least three days to get it from the DTO office following it is provided to the vehicle owners,” said a the sales executive.

Meanwhile, the vehicles ply on the roads without numbers on their vehicles posing a serious threat on the law and order situation.

“It is really risky if we do not have a registration on it as it could be stolen and taken away to some other place and sold out to any other person or it could be misused by anti social elements,” said a new vehicle owner not willing not to be named.
