Tusker menance in Kairo block of Lohardaga

Published on:

In a terrifying incident late Saturday night, a herd of wild elephants caused significant destruction in the Kairo block headquarters of Jharkhand's Lohardaga district. Amid heavy rainfall, the elephants emerged from the Sadhabe forest and made their way through Nayatoli toward the main chouk, leaving behind a trail of damage. According to local sources, the herd first entered the under construction house of local trader Nawab Khan in Nayatoli. Fortunately, no one was physically harmed. As the elephants moved on, they overturned an auto-rickshaw belonging to Kabir Khan. The situation escalated when the herd reached the Tad Mohalla area of the main market, where they broke the shutter of a warehouse owned by grain trader Suresh Sahu and consumed stored paddy, maize, and wheat. The rampage continued near the Eidgah, where the elephants damaged the doors and windows of another under-construction house owned by Khalid Ansari, son of the late Khaleel Ansari.

As they moved through Harijan Mohalla, the elephants also destroyed banana plantations in the fields.

By Sunday morning, June 29, the herd was spotted in the Namnagar Patra area on the Kairo-Sukurhuttu border, where they had temporarily settled. The sudden appearance of wild elephants in this densely populated area has once again triggered panic among local residents. Villagers are demanding immediate intervention from the forest department to ensure the safety of both life and property. There is growing resentment over the silence of the administration and forest officials, as locals allege that this is not the first such incident. Despite repeated warnings, they claim the authorities have failed to take concrete measures to prevent such intrusions.
