Tribal groups call Jharkhand bandh today

Published on:

A statewide bandh demanding domicile policy for the state has been called by various tribal groups, including Adivasi - Moolvasi Janadhikar Manch and Adivasi Jan Parishad for  Tuesday. The tribal organisations have claimed that the bandh will be a grand success as they will be getting wide range support from people from all walks of life.

“We have a single point demand of implementation of domicile policy in the state on the basis of khatiaan for which we will come out on the roads requesting people to close their shops and enterprises on Tuesday,” said convener of Aadivasi Moolvasi Janadhikar Manch Raju Mahto.

According to Mahto, as thousands of protesters come out on roads on Tuesday, all shops, enterprises, schools and colleges will remain close and no commercial vehicle will ply on the roads. A torchlight procession starting from Jaipal Singh Stadium at Kucheri Road to Albert Ekka Chowk was also organized on the eve of bandh on Monday. Emergency services like ambulance and other vehicles however, will be free from bandh, Mahto said. To make bandh successful, a State-level strategy has been chalked out through a series of meetings across the State, Mahto added.

Pro-domicile political parties Jharkhand Disom Party (JDP) and Jharkhand People's Party (JPP) have also extended their support to the bandh called by the tribal organisations in protest against the State Government’s slow approach in framing a domicile policy.

JDP Chief Salkhan Murmu, on Sunday said that forming a separate state without a domicile policy was a betrayal to its people and the State Government apparently took a similar posture.

Murmu further added that JDP along with JVM would demonstrate in front of Raj Bhawan in Ranchi on January 7 in support of the domicile policy and against large-scale displacement and migration.

JPP president Surya Singh Besra also alleged that Chief Minister Raghubar Das had promised to frame a domicile policy by November 15 last, but has kept the issue lingering, causing resentment among the majority tribal population.

Meanwhile, most of the schools including Delhi Public School, JVM Shyamali and all schools of DAV group have announced closure apprehending disturbances on Tuesday.
