Susen Mahato, hailing from Saraikela Kharsawan District of Jharkhand, has successfully climbed Mt Everest, the highest peak in the world, on Sunday morning. Mahato is part of the expedition team from India for Mt Everest and is supported by Tata Steel as a rural youth.
The success also coincides with the 60th anniversary year of the first climb of the zenith of the world when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbed the peak on May 29, 1953.
Mahato, 44, hailing from Paharpur village in Rajnagar block of Saraikela Kharsawan district of Jharkhand is accompanying Arunima for the expedition. He has successfully undergone training and conditioning camp under Bachendri Pal, Chief, Tata Steel Adventure Foundation. He has earlier successfully scaled Mt ChhamserKangri, 21,110 feet in 2012. His association with Tata Steel Adventure Foundation dates back to 1998 when he
participated in TSAF adventure sports like river rafting, hill walking and mountain-biking. SusenMahato is supported by Tata Steel as a rural youth and is currently working with TSAF as an Instructor.
Arunima Sinha, 26, who is also a part of the expedition is doing well in her strong pursuit of climbing the peak and would become the first women amputee in India to successfully climb to the top, when she conquers it.
Mahato has done basic and advance mountaineering courses from Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (Uttar Kashi) in 2002 and 2004. He’s also picked up rigours of search and rescue and climbing instruction methodology from the same institute in 2006 and 2007. He’s climbing various peaks, including Darwa Top (13,500ft) and Surya Top (13,000ft) in Garhwal Himalayas while assisting TSAF’s outdoor leadership programmes since 2002. He’s also one of the select few climbers who scaled the tough Chamser Kangri (21,725ft) in 2012.
“We at TSAF salute and support these extraordinary talents and will always come forward to promote such abilities. The grit and determination shown by Susen is truly praiseworthy and he will be an icon to the youth of the country and an embodiment of courage who can challenge all odds of life,” said a TSAE official.
