District Transport Office Ranchi and Ranchi Police are jointly going to conduct an innovative drive to issue driving licences to schoolkids as well as college going students in the district from Thursday.

In the unique initiative school students above 16 years age will be issued non gear two wheeler license and for above 18 years students license issued will be of two wheeler with gear and four wheeler.

“The basic idea behind this drive is to reduce the number of college students riding their two wheelers without license. The students here have to fill the form and along with the form had to submit three recent passport size photographs, proof of residence and proof of age. We will hand over the license on the same day. The drive is of three days,” said District Transport Officer (DTO), Ranchi Rajesh Kumar.

Police had registered over 1,358 cases for driving without licenses, over- speeding and for not wearing helmet in past three to four months. As per the available statistics the state capital has observed more than 50 road accidents in past one year. Moreover, mostly youngsters who were in their productive age have fallen victim of the fatal accidents.

SP (Traffic) Rajeev Ranjan said, “loss of life in this way is a worrying factor. The general perception is that accident cannot be avoided but it can be prevented and that could be prevented only if everyone respects traffic rules and have license and drive.”

Meanwhile, the police department and officers of the transport office have urged from the school as well as college authorities to extend their help in the making the drive successful. “We are expecting good crowd of student during this drive. We have also asked the school as well as college authorities for help,” added Kumar.
