Transforming INDIA digitally: 9 Years of Modi Government

Published on:

Since assuming office in 2014, the Narendra Modi-led government in India has prioritized leveraging technology as a catalyst for economic growth and development. Over the past nine years, the government has spearheaded numerous initiatives and policies aimed at harnessing the power of technology to transform various sectors and empower citizens.

Digital India

The Digital India initiative, launched in 2015, has been a cornerstone of the Modi government's tech-centric vision. It aims to ensure that government services are made available to citizens electronically, bridging the digital divide and promoting inclusive growth. Under this ambitious program, significant progress has been made in areas such as digital infrastructure, e-governance, and digital literacy.

Infrastructure Development :

The backbone of a digitally empowered nation is robust digital infrastructure. The Modi government has focused on expanding the reach of broadband connectivity and promoting the use of digital technologies in rural areas. The BharatNet project, for instance, aims to connect over 250,000 gram panchayats through high-speed broadband, facilitating digital inclusion.

E-Governance:

The government has embarked on an extensive digitalization drive, introducing numerous online platforms and applications to streamline administrative processes. Initiatives like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) have simplified financial transactions and tax compliance, respectively. These efforts have reduced bureaucratic red tape, improved efficiency, and enhanced transparency.

Digital Literacy:

Recognizing the importance of digital literacy, the government has taken steps to promote digital skills and awareness among citizens. Programs like Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA) have imparted digital training to millions of people in rural areas, empowering them to leverage technology for personal and professional growth.

Startup India:

Under the Modi government, there has been a renewed focus on fostering entrepreneurship and promoting innovation. The Startup India initiative, launched in 2016, aims to create a conducive ecosystem for startups to thrive. It provides various incentives and support mechanisms, such as tax benefits, funding opportunities, and incubation centers.

Promoting Innovation:

The government has actively encouraged innovation by simplifying regulatory processes and introducing initiatives like Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL). These programs promote research and development, nurture young talent, and cultivate a culture of innovation across educational institutions.

Funding and Support:

Recognizing the importance of access to capital, the government has launched several funds to support startups. Initiatives such as the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS) and the Atal Innovation Mission's Atal Innovation Fund (AIF) provide financial assistance and mentorship to promising startups, enabling them to scale and succeed.

Make in India:

The Make in India campaign, launched in 2014, aims to transform India into a global manufacturing hub. The government has harnessed technology to promote indigenous manufacturing, attract foreign investment, and boost job creation.

Digital Manufacturing:

The government has emphasized the adoption of digital technologies like 3D printing, Internet of Things , and Artificial Intelligence in manufacturing processes. The National Policy on Electronics and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for various sectors have encouraged domestic production and reduced import dependency.

Skill Development:

To support the growth of the manufacturing sector, the government has prioritized skill development. Initiatives like Skill India and the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) have equipped millions of youth with industry-relevant skills, making them employable in the rapidly evolving manufacturing landscape.
