After school and college students, teachers of Government schools can look forward to pick tips on scientific research and development.

In an attempt to help teachers to hone skills in research and development, the education department of East Singhbhum district has sought the cooperation of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) National Metallurgical laboratory. The plan is to rope in CSIR unit to impart training to government schoolteachers.

In a letter addressed to the NMl, district education officer Ashok Kumar Sharma, has sought the cooperation of the authorities at NMl-Jamshedpur, a constituent unit of CSIR. The department has urged them to impart hands-on scientific training to the science teachers of secondary schools in the district.

"We want to focus on scientific education and for this we want to hone skills of our teachers so that they can prepare the students to help them scale new heights in research," said Sharma.

Another official of the department said that just choosing science as a career option will not make the nation advance. It is essential to promote R&D activities among the students at an early age.

It may be mentioned that National Metallurgical laboratory (NMl), Jamshedpur has ventured into technical training of personnel both from India and abroad. These training courses provide the essential foundation needed for addressing day to day issues for scientific learning, conducting research, and growing business operation in the field of mineral, metals and materials.

Following the success of the school-NMl interactive programme (SNIP) introduced by the laboratory in early 2012, the district education department has resolved to join hands with the laboratory for ensuring effective scientific training to the teachers.

Meanwhile, officials of NMl informed work is in full progress to provide professional training at regular interval. NMl plans allow teachers to participate in lectures by eminent scientists on current topics, interactive laboratory visit and interaction with the scientists at NMl.

It may be mentioned that the National Metallurgical laboratory, Jamshedpur is the third in the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) family of 38 laboratories.
