In a bid to curb the ragging menace, electronic security and surveillance system would be installed soon inside the campus at Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad. Hundreds of the CCTV cameras would be installed soon inside the classrooms, hostels and several other important spots at ISM campus, said an official.

“ISM management is on move for earliest installation of CCTV cameras, tenders will be invited shortly,” added the official. Special security guards were also deputed at several spots inside the campus. A new student co-ordination group consisting 10 students was also formed to keep a close watch on ragging at ISM, said the official.

ISM management took strict action against 12 students for ragging the first-year students. These students are Subba Rao, J S Reddy, N Naineeth, M S Reddy, K R Teja, T M Babu, A S Manideep, J Kanti Raj, J S Manoj, K Yassaswi and S Bhargav Reddy.

Four of these students were expelled for a year while seven were barred from attending classes for next semester (six months).

One student (final year) is barred from campus placements. The student is also a member of the Students Coordination Group and he was barred for hiding the incident of ragging and harassing a junior student from the ISM authority, said an official.

The management also slapped a penalty of Rs20,000 and Rs10,000 on the students for their involvement in ragging. Students are also asked to vacate the hostel, said the official.

A complaint was filed with the ISM management on August 25 against 11 students by the victim’s father stating that his son was harassed by seniors on August 23.

Action was taken after the probe and recommendations of anti-ragging committee, said Colonel MK Singh, Registrar of ISM. “A formal complaint would be lodged at local police station,” added Singh.
