The monthly crime statements issued by Jharkhand Police shows that theft, burglary, and kidnapping continue to dominate the crime statistics in the city, followed by murder and rape. The State capital also seems to be the crime capital, with the highest number of crimes being reported in Ranchi during these four months, as compared to the other 23 districts.
The monthly statements, uploaded on the official website of Jharkhand police shows that 808 cases of theft were reported between January to April this year, with 267 cases being reported in February alone.
The second most reported crime is house burglary, with 113 cases reported during the same time. Apart from these two, 78 kidnapping cases, 55 cases of murder, and 47 cases of rape were also reported. The district also has the highest number of reported crimes in the State, with an average of 670 crimes reported every month this year.
Theft also seems to be the primary concern of people of the city. Arpita Singh, a student pursuing her Masters’ degree in Ranchi, said that the data is not shocking at all. “One keeps hearing cases of theft and chain-snatching in broad daylight every second day,” she remarked.
The administration admitted the alarming numbers and talked about preventive measures being taken. “We have allotted different teams to deal with different crimes,” said SP City, Sujata KumariVeenapani. “We have increased patrolling, PCRs, bikes, for night crimes like burglary. Awareness and detection are crucial when it comes to dealing with rape cases, since a lot of cases go unreported,” she told The Pioneer.
When asked about more intensive measures to curb crime in the city, the SP said that the data is analysed on a regular basis and crime hotspots are detected in the city based on it. “Once the hotspots are determined, we increase patrolling and other preventive measures in those areas,” she said.
