'Tellaiya Dam should be declared Imported Bird Area'

Published on:

Tellaiya dam situated at the border of Hazaribagh and Koderma district can be declared as the fourth Imported Bird Area in Jharkhand.

This information was shared by Program Manager of Indian Bird Conservation Network Dr. Raju Kasambey who was in Jharkhand with his team from Mumbai till Saturday last.

The team of Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) conducted a survey of the birds focusing at the species of birds, their number and their present conditions in and around Hazaribagh district.

In this survey, the team found huge number of local and migrated birds in Tellaiya Dam area. Out of the birds found, maximum number was bar headed goose from Himalaya and ladakh region. Open bill stark, camorent, grebe, ferogenis duck were also found in tellaiya dam.

The members of the team said that for declaring a region as Imported Bird Area, the number of birds must be more than 20,000 in number in that area. In the survey conducted in Tellaiya dam, birds were found in numbers more than this required criterion.

Already Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary, Udhwa lake bird sanctuary in Sahebganj and Palamu Tiger Reserve have been declared as IBA in Jharkhand and if Tellaiya Dam is declared as IBA it will be the fourth in the State. The team of bird watchers was here in Jharkhand since last week of December 2013.

Dr. Raju expressed his happiness on finding the endangered species of many birds in Jharkhand. He said that we have found new species of around 20 birds in Jharkhand which is good news for the ornithologists as well as the bird lovers. He shared that till date they have found 170 species of birds in Jharkhand.

Endangered River lapwing has been found in Palamau Tiger reserve which is very less in number across the country. Other new species found includes Rosy Minuet, red throated flycatcher, White necked woodpecker and pigmy woodpecker.  The information gathered from here will be included in the next edition of wildlife books published by Bombay Natural History Society.

The team from BNHS included IBA Advocacy Officer Neha Sinha, Karnataka IBCN State Coordinator Dr. S Subramaniam, Jharkahnd coordinator Satya Prakash and bird watchers M Singh, Prabhat Thakur and others.
