Tata Steel Zoological Park is all set to start a Wildlife Health Care Centre with a well equipped operation theater and new veterinary equipments. The new facility is being added as per the guidelines of the Central Zoo Authority.

State Bank of India has come forward and helped Tata zoo in its mission to safeguard  wildlife and ecosystem health through use of exceptional science and advancing wildlife and ecosystem health in Kolhan Region of Jharkhand.

Mr Rakesh Sharma, chief general manager, State Bank of India (Patna Circle) will formally dedicate the centre on  December 6. The centre will be rechristened as SBI Wildlife Health Care.

Over the last two decades the park has been carrying out the service of rescue and rehabilitation of animals that stray out from Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary and nearby  forest areas. During the year 2010, the zoo was able to give second life to a wild elephant calf Rajni which had fallen prey to human barbarism. She was declared beyond recovery by the local forest department.

However, Tata zoo took the challenge to treat her wounds. After her recuperation at zoo she was moved to Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary in March, 2011 for a possible reintegration with a wild herd.

The process is still continuing through aid of the sanctuary officials. The new operation facilities will have tranquilising gun and surgical equipment like Microscope, weighing machine and squeeze cage.

With it becoming operational Tata Zoo will be able to extend  timely veterinary intervention in treating wild animals in distress in Kolhan region, disease investigation and treatment thus reducing mortalities in wild animals both in captivity and in wild.

They are ensuring balanced diet and nutrition to captive wild animals like, rescue and rehabilitation of animals caught in human conflict, breeding of the endangered , data management, sharing with other institutions the capacity of veterinarians.
