Tata Power undertakes initiatives to save energy

Tata Power’s Maithon Power limited (MPl), a 74:26 joint venture between Tata Power and DVC, has always been at the forefront by maintaining its operational excellence, state-of-the-art infrastructure, to being a technically advanced power plant. In continuation with this philosophy, Tata Power’s Maithon Power limited has undertaken two technical initiatives at the plant site with an aim to decrease its auxiliary power consumption.

Maithon Power limited’s 2X525 MW Ash Handling Plant currently has two stages of ash conveying system by pressurised air. The team enhanced the first stage conveying mechanism by reducing the cycle-gap timer of APH & duct which minimises the carryover of coarser ash to ESP 1st Field, thus reducing the running hours of compressor. This significantly reduces its auxiliary power consumption.

The plant also has a liquid fuel (HFO) firing system for initial start-up and furnace stabilisation, each unit had a dedicated piping and pumping system for this. Now, an interconnection line with a valve is made to facilitate the redundancy of the pump. Now by running one pump for the both units, MPl team has successfully decreased the overall power consumption and has also increased the availability of pumps.

Speaking about these two initiatives, K Chandrashekhar, CEO - Maithon Power ltd, stated, “At Maithon Power limited, our utmost efforts are aimed towards increasing the plant’s efficiency by adopting cutting-edge technology. We are very happy with the results and would like to thank the team of engineers and associates for their hard work.”
