Surplus rain in June but break monsoon worries farmers in Jharkhand

Published on:

Farmers of Jharkhand are worried over the way southwest monsoon has gone weak over Jharkhand due to break monsoon resulting in subdued rainfall activity across Jharkhand.

However, the first spell of monsoon in June ended with surplus rain of 34 per cent in Jharkhand but farmers are particularly worried as July first week is considered the right time for harvesting. From the first of June to July 2; Jharkhand overall witnessed 276.2mm rain against a normal 218.5 mm in the corresponding month.

The monsoon is stuck over Uttar Pradesh which has weakened rain in Jharkhand. This phenomenon is called break monsoon  and weather experts believe that the break monsoon phenomenon may be over in the next one week.

Nevertheless, districts like Ranchi, Deoghar, East Singhbhum, Giridih, Gumla, Bokaro, and Latehar have been witnessing cloudy weather with light to moderate rain and lightning.  In the last 24 hours; Chandankiyari block of Bokaro district witnessed 53.4 mm. In the next five days parts of Jharkhand will receive light rain.

But weather experts say that this isolated rain is not monsoon but a temporary impact of formation of the low trough passing over Bihar and Madhya Pradesh which is causing rain in  Jharkhand.

The sporadic rain  has given relief from humidity caused by western southern wind.

The satellite images had suggested a trough at mean sea level from northwest Uttar Pradesh to northwest Bay of Bengal across East Uttar Pradesh, southern Jharkhand and northern Odisha.

But despite the break monsoon Jharkhand is expected to receive a good monsoon. Last year too in the month of June Jharkhand had registered a surplus rain 202.4mm rain against a normal of 199.9 mm, but it was too meagre to count, one per cent only.

But in 2019, June, Jharkhand had suffered a rain deficit of 55 per cent.
