Concerned over the heat wave conditions prevailing in the city, various English medium schools have declared extension of summer vacation. Schools decided to extend holidays for classes from nursery to 2 till June 22. The schools which were supposed to reopen from June 17 will now reopen on June 23 for primary section students. Meanwhile, for the students of standard three and above classes will run from 6:25 am to 11:30 am, starting June 17.

The school authorities said that they have no choice but to extend holidays. The classes in the primary section of all schools, both English and Hindi medium, will resume on revised dates. However, for the higher classes the schools will resume according to original schedule on June 17.

A senior functionary of Jharkhand Unaided Private English Medium Schools Association, said that the schools have agreed to extend the summer vacations. “I think the decision will be of great relief for the parents and students,” he said. There is a forecast of further rise in the temperature in coming days. The maximum temperature on Monday is likely to hover around 42 degrees Celsius.  While adults found it difficult to cope with the heat wave, the worst hit was the school going children. There were number of complaints about students fainting or falling sick due to heat-stroke.

"It is left to the schools to work out the mechanism to cover the loss of study hours. A few of the schools will probably hold special classes in the weekends," said a functionary of the Jamshedpur chapter of the Jharkhand Private Unaided English Medium Schools Association. The parents, meanwhile, have expressed delight on the extension of the summer vacations.
