The 26-year old Kumari Anamika happens to be the only-woman topper among top 10 scorers in the State Civil Services examinations conducted by Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) result of which was declared on August 16. Selected in the Bihar Finance Service through BPSC as Commercial Tax Officer, she seeks to create literacy awareness among girls’and her parents. Sharing her life’s ‘simple yet unique story’ to The Pioneer, she emphasized on words which can inspire a person to strive constantly in order to achieve his or her aspirations. Excerpts:

Tell us your preparation strategy for BPSCIJ

It all began in 2010 when I was pursuing my fourth year Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (BVSc and AH) in Ranchi College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry. I made two  attempts in Union Public Service Commission conducted civil services examinations but could not clear. Those days managing civil services preparation and college studies together were not an easy task but I was determined to lead the path. After getting married in the same year, my husband Dr Ravikant’s cooperation in home affairs despite being a professional veterinary specialist made the groundwork easier. In 2011, I appeared for BPSC prelims first time and was chosen for the mains followed by the interview. Inspite of pursuing science, I chose arts subjects Public Administration and labour Social Welfare as optional subjects at the mains examination. After all, a civil servant must be a ‘master of all but not jack of all subjects’. To my surprise, I secured 68 percent out of 100 in this final result with just six marks behind the topper.

Tell us about your previous academic journey.

I bagged five gold medals out of seven in my BVSc and AH (2006-11) degree with 80.2 percent. The percentage was same in standard 12th which I completed from Army Public School, Bariatu. I dropped two years for medical preparation after 12th class and then joined veterinary course. My 10th board exam result was 81.6 percent. Frankly speaking, studies has always been my favourite past time. I love studying.

You are basically a domicile of Bihar’s Sitamarhi district. Then, how come you, your husband and parents are settled at RanchiIJ

Ours is the only family residing outside Sitamarhi in our entire joint family. My father Upendra Kumar after taking voluntary service retirement from Indian Air Force in 2000 preferred to settle at Ranchi considering the wonderful climate, communication and education facilities. My younger sister and brother too have been outstanding students in their school and college. Presently, my father is working as Security Officer in Reliance and mother Renu Kumari as always is associated with teaching profession. As far as my husband is concerned who hails from Bokaro, he owns a veterinary clinic here since Ranchi is emerging a better horizon for the veterinary sector in the entire Jharkhand.

How exactly would you contribute to the society with your responsibilities of a gazette officerIJ

My native place lacks facilities to educate the girls. I seek to open free coaching centre for school going girls of this area belonging to different social categories. It is because, majority of the people hesitate giving basic educational opportunities to their daughters. Moreover, I would request the Jharkhand Government to focus especially on imparting education to the children of tribal maids working within Ranchi. Providing subsidy in government projects cannot help in erasing complete illiteracy. Awareness is required.
