A mob of students created panic and destroyed properties, vehicles and hit the common man, who was crossing the Mahatma Gandhi Marg here on Friday. The mob of about 1,000 students coming from Purulia Road created rampage on the MG Marg in the presence of police, which also had to face violence during the bandh.
Following rampage on the MG Marg (Main Road) during the daylong bandh called by Opposition Parties in Ranchi on Friday, district administration is now planning to issue notices to the hostel wardens from where these students had come from asking whether it was in their knowledge that the students had gone out to take part in the protest. Apparently, students from Adiwasi Hostel, loyla Hostel and St. Xavier’s College Hostel took part in the protest and
ransacked Main Road in Ranchi breaking the wind screen of vehicles and four wheelers whatever came in their way.
“FIRs have already been lodged against unknown persons at lower Bazar, Kotwali and Daily Market Police Stations in Ranchi. Action will be taken from tomorrow against those found involved in it after identifying the students from the video footage taken by the district administration,” said Sadar DSP and Ranchi Police Spokesperson Vikas Chandra Srivastava. Charges of unlawful assembly and Destruction of Property Act would be levelled against them, he added.
“If they did not have information about the whereabouts of these students, they will be charged with irresponsible attitude towards discharging their duties or if they knew that they were going to take part in the protest, they will be asked why they did not inform the police,” said the DSP.
One person has also filed an FIR in Pandra OP after his vehicles windscreen was broken by the protesters. Several persons including top politicians including former Chief Ministers Hemant Soren and Babulal Marandi and former Union Minister Subodh Kant Sahay and others arrested during the bandh, he said.
“A total of 671 persons were arrested from Ranchi where 335 protesters from the city and 336 protesters from rural areas during the day,” said the DSP.
All of a sudden, hundreds of students apparently coming from different hostels in Ranchi suddenly took to the streets near Albert Ekka Chowk on Friday, holding bamboo sticks and other traditional weapons in their hands and shouting slogans against State Government, ransacked the shops and on Main Road.
