Students unaware of counselling centres

The Counselling Centre of JAC and RINPAS are on alert mode to take preventive measures for students suffering from depression that many times results into suicidal cases after the declaration of board exam results. Though no such cases have been reported in the city yet, they are ready to tackle students’ stress related queries. Sadly, the students in the Capital City are unaware of these counselling centres in the areas of academic concerns and depression.

“I have heard about career counselling but never came across students counselling centre for suicidal cases in Ranchi. None of my fiend is depressed with the marks and they do not seek such kind of counselling,” said Sohini Majumdar, Student of Jawahar Vidya Mandir.

Similarly, when asked from Nadim Ahmed, Student of St. Antony School said, “I have heard about city career counselling. For first time in my life, I have come across this kind of counselling centre in the city that is working for depressed and stressed students.” However, the students from different schools have no idea of such counselling centres in the city.

Masroor Jahan, Additional Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at RINPAS said, “Counselling is vital in cases of depression when a student is grossly unhappy with his/her results. No suicide case has come yet to my knowledge and no students have visited the centre regarding such cases.”

She mentioned that it is responsibility of parents to bring their children and seek help from the counsellors for their mental trauma. “The negative thoughts can be converted into positive thinking by motivating and building self confidence of their children,” said she.  “The reasons to attempt suicide among the student are due to negative thoughts and failure in life.  The students do not cop up and these negative thoughts accumulate in their brain which results in impulsive action,” she added. Seema, District Child Protection Officer said, “We have not made any plan to form a community that would handle such cases. Untill a case is reported how will we take action.”
