Unruly scenes ruled the day at Jamshedpur Women’s College following protests by students’ union representatives demanding an increase in the seats of M.Com stream. Students’ union representatives also locked the college gates banning the students from entering the campus. A similar protest over hike in seats took place on October 1.
The students are demanding to at least increase the seats up to 150 as compared to 120. There are about 100 more aspiring students who want admission in M.Com.
The reason behind protests is said to be the students of Part I who had to appear for examinations could not reach the examination halls.
Students’ union representatives said that they had recently met the principal of the Jamshedpur Women's College, Sujata Sinha and made her aware about their demands. They had also threatened that they would close the college gates in case their demands to increase the M.Com seats are not met.
“We are protesting for the benefits of the students. We had warned the principal and at the end we are compelled to agitate because there are many M.Com students who are seeking admission and do not know where to go,” said Sushila Sen, a student leader of Jamshedpur Women’s College.
While students’ union closed the gates, other students who had their examinations retaliated and asked the gates be opened for a while. The college authorities informed the Bistupur police in case the untoward incidents cropped up. A student said that the principal has assured that they will try and do whatever they can and will declare the list tomorrow. The girl added that she had also promised that in case they fail to get the students admitted in this college, they will try and speak to other college regarding the admission of these students.
