Students prefer to opt for colleges in their hometown

As coronavirus continues to sweep the globe, students seem to be in a fix when it comes to choosing the right career path. While some are ready to drop a year and wait for the pandemic to be over, others are keen to study in a college in their hometown no matter how good the result.

As per career counsellors across Ranchi, no permanent changes are foreseen in career trends. However, changes in career options being made are being observed with parents now preferring to send their child to a nearby city for graduation instead of a far away land.

“The present preference is either to study in a college in your hometown or go to a nearest big city. People are not too keen to send their children to any city from where travelling is a hassle or takes time. The primary reason for this is the fear of another lockdown as parents obviously don’t want their child stranded in an unknown place. The career choices being made by the students are still the same though the place of study might have changed,” said career counsellor Dr SS Singh from Educatif Heritage, Ranchi.

“In the last few years, students have also started opting for short term job oriented courses rather than long term ones. Instead of a B.Tech, the preferred choice is now a B.Voc (Bachelors in Vocational Training) which is a three years course as compared to a four year engineering course,” added Singh.

For those who wanted to a make a career in the field of medicine, China was a very popular option but that destination is not being considered on any grounds. The trend of going to Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand has also come down by about 20- 25 percent.

“Over the years, for MBBS and engineering students Kazakhstan has been a very popular choice but they are not eager to go abroad. Presently, the various branches of computer science are verypopular option. In the coming times the electronic sector is also likely to come up with various opportunities. In engineering specialisations either in computer science or electronic and communications will be in huge demand. For commerce students, BBA in Computer Application, BBA in Law or BBA in Business Accounts are popular choices. A lot of students are also ready to wait for a year before they decide to take admission in their preferred college in a course of their choice,” said Arvind Shah from Career Guidance, Ranchi.
