Students get lessons on legal rights

Students of Jamshedpur Women’s College and the Graduate School College for Women were made aware of their rights as women and the free assistance that they can avail from the District legal Serices Authority (DlSA).

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai and DlSA under the National University Students Skill Development (NUSSD) programme organised a seminar. The seminar and a practical demonstration was organised at the Graduate School College for Women today.

Dilip Jaiswwal, K. K. Sinha, Jaya Moitra, Nagendra Kumar, Suredra Kumar all members of DlSA were present at the seminar. More than 250 students from both the colleges were present for the awareness programme.  The programme was organised for the girls as many of them who hail from rural areas remain unaware about their rights. Since legal course is one of the foundation courses of the NUSSD programmes running for National Service Scheme (NSS) students in a couple of colleges, this was an interaction between the advocates and students to know the legal system better.

After the seminar, girls were shown a van, the interior of which gave students a basic idea of a court set up. The van is designed for awareness of DlSA services in rural areas of the district.

Dilip Jaiswal talked about legal aid services which are being provided by DlSA and how they serve in the villages and free the poor from the financial challenges and how they assist a poor man to get justice. He addressed students about what the court contains and the role of every person working in that court. He also told us how they functioned in the villages by having video conferences from the experts.

He made students aware of child marriage and what all actions would be taken against it. He advised all for better education so that we may not have any kind of problems in our future and may be able to handle everything.

Pradeep Kumar Gupta, co-ordinator of the NUSSD project, TISS said the skill development courses are running well but until and unless students learn it is important for the students to undergo practical experience.
