Students' concern over an uncertain RU election

Published on:

Ranchi University was supposed to conduct the student union poll immediately after the Durga Puja but this time again the authorities failed to do so. On the other hand student union poll is getting delayed since long. last student union poll was conducted in the year 2007.

“Though it was assured to us by the university authorities that this year they will conduct the student election but unfortunately this year too university failed to meet our expectation. As per the guideline, university election can only be conducted during the session August to October,” said National Student Union of India (NSUI), university incharge Tanuj Khatri.

Citing details about the demand which was kept before the university authorities from student union side Khatri added, “Our first and foremost proposal was to include all the 16 colleges under Ranchi University irrespective of their Autonomous status. We have also put the demand to conduct direct election. This is the third year in a row when the elections dates have not been declared and it is still lingering.”

The first student union election was conducted in 1987 and the second was conducted after a gap of 20 years in 2007. The 2007 election gave the university its first female student union leader.

Speaking about the present status of student election Vice Chancellor of RU, Dr Ramesh Kumar Pandey said, “The University is serious about conducting the students’ union election. Presently we are abided by two things panchayat polls and second round of admission in PG courses, which is presently being conducted. Moreover, we also have to manage the session and declare the dates.”

On accepting the demand kept by the student union leaders Pandey further added, “We are considering demands of student union leaders but we can only accept those demands which are within our parameter. Student leaders demanded to include all the colleges in the election, considering that we have written letters to few autonomous colleges also but they did not accept the proposal, hence in this case we are helpless.”

Few students of various colleges under RU feel that election must be conducted as their elected leaders can put specific demands before the authorities. “If the elections are conducted then atleast basic facilities like toilets, drinking water, separate common rooms, libraries in colleges and other issues might be sorted out soon,” said, Binita Dubey of Yogoda Satsang College.
