State to witness heavy rains ahead

After getting report from the State Government about deficit rainfall in various district of the State including Ranchi (75 per cent), Khunti (68 per cent), Lohardaga (69 per cent), West Singhbhum (67 per cent), Saraikela (67 per cent), Ramgarh (68 per cent), Bokaro (74 per cent), Birsa Agriculture University (BAU) Weather Scientist A Wadood on Thursday has said that according to the reports issued by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), there is strong possibility that the State will witness heavy rainfall in days to come.

From July 26, there is chance that it will witness more than average rainfall, he added.  Wadood said that the farmers should implement contingent agriculture policy.

“In this plan, if uplands remain not irrigated, then crops like Pigeon pea, Black gram, Oat and Sorghum should be cultivated as they need less water. All the crops should be cultivated by forming ridges in the farms. The ridges will get flow of water from water conservation and if there is excessive rain, then the plants will not get spoiled and the soil will also not erode.

In those farms where sowing completed and germination not grown in these cases sowing should be done once again and if there is dense sowing, then extirpate the crops and should be sown at vacant lands,” said Wadood.

BAU Dean Agriculture and Crops Specialist, MS Yadav, said that weeds should be controlled within 15 days of sowing. The seeds he also suggested seeds of Pigeon pea which requires less water including Upas 120, Birsa Arhar-1, for Black Gram it is Birsa Urad-1, WBU-10, Pat u-19, pant u-31, for seed of Golden Gram it is HUM-16, IPM-23, for Sorghum it is CSV-1616, CSH-16 and for Oat seeds it is VL 149.

Suggesting the farmers that what they have to do before sowing seeds, Soil Scientist, BK Aggarwal said that for pulses and oilseeds crops to remove acidity from soils the farmers should mix 1.5 to 2 quintals per acre extinguishers or Dolomite in the farms.

Soil Scientists DK Shahi said that for before sowing seeds of pulse crops it should be treated with Organic manure like Risobiyam Culture and there is information available on economical prices in the University for Crops of Pulses and Oilseeds.

Insect Scientists PK Singh said that sowing should be started after treated seeds. He said that per kilo seed should be treated with two gram Corbendejeem.
