It is bingo time for 20 year old Kumari Pragati Nanda and 22 year old Mohammed Naushad Akhtar, passouts of Suraj Singh Memorial College’s zoology department as their research paper on ‘Zooplanktons in Kanke Dam’ has been published in international journal Biospectra last month. The renowned journal usually selects research writings of scientists and it is for the first time that such papers have been taken from the students.

The achievement marks on the time when this college is undergoing infrastructure hurdles in carrying out its academic session. “Both the students cum toppers of Bachelor of Science Zoology honours (B.Sc) 2010-13 Session like other batch students here learned the minute scientific techniques at the laboratory which is managed in the same room conducting theory class. Overlooking the infrastructural difficulties, the devotion to learn and carry the research at city’s largest water reservoir Kanke Dam with accuracy is indeed an inspiration for scholars.”

The utility and side effects of micro-organisms such as mosquito larvae, water bug, amoeba and daphnia at Kanke Dam were noticed minutely by these students. “Flexibility of such scientific work is important in context to social welfare,” Thakur further added relating on how the study would benefit the mankind. Notably, the renowned journal is read widely by scientists who are working on various science and technological developments referring some kind of advantage or disadvantage to the public.

The fact of mosquito larvae increase at Kanke Dam thereby spreading drinking water diseases and lack of fish culture was found out during this college level final year research. Pragati said, “The increase of alkalinity in this water body is expected to hamper the health of local residents. We observed this drawback.” “Ours was just an initial effort on knowing the Kanke Dam. There is much more to work on as the dam has lot of scopes for biological and zoological studies in development perspective,” Naushad added.
