Spurt in theft cases keeps cops on toes

Taking a serious note of the spurt in theft cases in the city, the police have started special police patrolling system during night in the Steel City. A search drive is also being conducted at several parts of the city.

The East Singhbhum district police have taken steps to increasing vigil in and around residential flats of the city.  The police have failed to nab robbers’ gang which succeeded in executing the robbery of over Rs 18 lakh in two residential apartments at New Baradwari and Sonari within a span of seven days on February 29 and March 5 respectively.

Deputy superintendent of police (headquarters-II) Amar Pandey has been deputed to investigate into the robbery incident at Adarsh Nagar in Sonari. He said that they are conducting raids but have not been able to establish a clue to the gang behind the robbery.

He stated that while probing into the robbery they had contacted Shivangi Sinha, the 45-year-old woman who had been taken hostage by a gang of four robbers at Aakash Apartment in New Baradwari on February 29 morning, for knowing the features of the criminals.

“From the description made by Shivangi about the four robbers and the description made by Tapan Chatterjee and wife Sushama, it has been clear that it was the same gang which committed the robbers at the two places.  Not only the features of the robbers are the same, but also their modus operandi is also more or less same,” said Pandey.

The police are also scanning the footages of CCTV cameras installed on way to the Adarsh Nagar’s phase VII so as to find out a clue to the movement of the gang of robbers into the house of Tapan Chatterjee.

Meanwhile, senior superintendent of police, Anoop T Mathew who is monitoring the probe into the twin robbery case has instructed the officers-in-charge of all the police stations in the city to ensure an enhanced patrolling around the residential apartment, surprise checking of all mode of vehicles and regular monitoring the CCTV cameras installed on the main thoroughfares as well as the roads leading to the residential apartments.

“One police officer from the police station concerned would keep an eye on the movement of constables deployed at different places under the system,” a police official informed. These constables would keep an eye on suspicious elements moving in night and check them.

Officials said that constables on foot would be deployed in a stretch of every one km for patrolling. Several other constables would be deployed for the purpose, besides patrolling by the local police.

“Burglaries have increased during the winter as many families are away on vacation. Specially constituted patrolling squads have already been deployed under the limits of the Mango and Sakchi,” said police official

A gang of four armed robbers posing to be cops had decamped with cash and ornaments worth over Rs 15 lakh from the house of Tapan Chatterjee at Adarsh Nagar's phase VII in Sonari in the night of Saturday.

Earlier, on February 29, four armed robbers had decamped with gold ornaments and cash over Rs 2.5 lakh from the house of Chandra Prakash Sinha at Aakash Apartment in New Baradwari in Sitaramdera .
