Speed breakers to come up in accident-prone zones,

Published on:

The traffic police of the East Singhbhum district police have decided to set up speed breakers at number points on the city roads which are considered to be accident-prone.

The initiative to set up speed breakers at the accident-prone roads has been rolled out due to rising cases of mishaps in the city.

The five accident-prone zones that have been identified by the district administration are Hathigora Temple area (close to Sakchi-Mango Road and Subarnarekha link Road), Jubilee Park Gate (Near district collectorate), Garam Nullah (Near Tata Steel Security Training Centre), Voltas Building turnaround in Bistupur (The Bistupur-Jugsalai intersection) and the road between litti Chowk in Bhuiyandih and Slag Road in Humepipe.

Deputy Superintendent of police (traffic) Rakesh Mohan Sinha said that they have identified number points where the speed breakers are necessary to be set up.

The traffic DSP pointed out that though they have identified the points for setting up the speed breakers, but they would go ahead with consultation with Jusco, the utility company which maintains the roads.

"We need to put speed breakers on these identified locations in order to curb the increasing incidents of road mishaps. A meeting will be held with the officials of the utility company shortly, where all the traffic-related problems have to be discussed," said the senior traffic police officer.

Traffic police have also put up speed limit hoardings at sensitive zones. But the hoardings seem to have failed to meet the purpose.

The number of road accidents in the city was showing a downward trend till recently. But with beginning of summer season cases of accidents have shot suddenly turning the roads into a virtual 'death traps'.

Over 70 persons have died in road mishaps in the steel city since January 1 this year, despite the traffic police is conducting a regular helmet checking drive in the city on regular basis.

The officer also revealed the steel city needs as many as 700 traffic constables for maintaining the vehicular traffic movement effectively. At present there are only 125 constables in the traffic wing.

Despite the red-eyed skeleton cautioning motorists to drive safely figures of the number of people killed and injured in road accidents are on rise. Road accidents claim hundreds of lives every year, besides injuring thousands of others and causing damage to vehicles.
