Ahead of Jharkhand   Assembly elections later this year, the Election Commission has decided to address the grievances of voters, who failed to exercise their franchise in the recently-held parliamentary elections. The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Jharkhand is going to start summary revision of electoral rolls soon.

The ECI in an official release has announced to undertake a special summary revision of electoral roll in three States — Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Haryana. Draft electoral roll will be published on June 9. Claims for getting names enrolled and objections against the enrolment of any person can be filed before the designated officer at the respective polling station from June 9 to June 30.

Special enrolment camps will be organised on June 21, 22, 28 and 29 at every polling station. Draft electoral roll of the respective polling station will also be made available on these dates for the convenience of electors along with adequate number of forms for enrolment in case of missing names.

Sharing the information, Jharkhand CEO PK Jajoria said, “We have received a proposal from the Election Commission of India stating to initiate revision of electoral rolls on stipulated time. We would commence the work accordingly.”

Several youngsters who turned 18 after January 1, 2013, and failed to get them enrolled before the lok Sabha elections can also submit the application form for enrolment of their name in the electoral roll. Application for deletion, change in address and correction within the constituency can also be submitted.

In the recent elections, several voters complained their names were deleted from the voters list despite the fact that they have been residing in the area for several years. Moreover, there were few cases where names of some members in a family were present in the electoral roll while others were found missing from the roll.

Responding to such complaints, Jajoria added that the commission had informed the people repeatedly to verify status of their name in the electoral roll published on EC’s website through campaigns and paid advertisements but people did not follow it. This time also the department will use all possible medium to intimate the people once the revision of rolls starts.

Besides, old voters registration, several first time voters’ names are also expected to be added in the list. The database of electors will be updated on July 25. The final roll will be published by July 31.

“The commission is providing second chance to all the eligible voters of the State, we are hopeful that this time all can exercise their franchise in the Assembly election,” added Jajoria.
