The administration will launch a special night drive from Saturday night to curb noise pollution from blaring loudspeakers in city.

Special officer of Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC)-the local urban body in Jamshedpur, will be carrying out night vigil from 10 pm and visiting the crowd-pullers pandals to ensure complete ban on loudspeakers between 10 am and 6 am in accordance with the 2005 Supreme Court order.

East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner Amitabh Kaushal had directed SDO Dhalbhum Alok Kumar and Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) special officer Dipak Sahay to ensure complete ban on use of loudspeakers in city from Wednesday at night (between 10 am and 6 am).

“We have resolved to enforce the Supreme Court order and initiate prosecution as per Municipal Act at any spot be it puja pandals or any community gathering. Directive has been issued to the special officer to carry out night vigil at pandals and initiate actions with help of local police stations against offenders,” said Kaushal.

Some of the fairs which attract huge footfalls and are organised by puja committees are at Kasidih, Burmamines, Sidhgora, Kadma, Sonari, Mango, Ramdas Bhatta, contractors Area in Bistupur, Dhatkidih, Bagbera and Baridih.

The apex court had in July 2005 banned use of loudspeakers and music systems between 10 pm and 6 am (except in public emergencies) at public places in view of the noise pollution having serious effect on health of residents.

The Supreme Court guidelines have also been quoted in the order which States: “The noise level at the boundary of the public place where loudspeaker or public address system or any other noise source is being used, shall not exceed 10 dB (A) above the ambient noise standards for the area or 75 dB (A) whichever is lower between 10pm and 6am.
