Special cell to check extortion trade in Jharkhand soon

Published on:

In a bid to provide adequate security to the ongoing developmental projects and check extortion business in Jharkhand through levy from contractors and construction companies by the red rebels, Jharkhand Police are soon to constitute Development Protection Cell (DPC) in the State.

Complaints could be registered with the Cell through a helpline number issued by it, on the basis of which, further action will be taken by the police.

“This cell is being constituted basically to cater to the problems arising in those areas where developmental activities are being carried

out and people engaged in those activities are disturbed by demanding levy by the insurgents or any other anti-social elements,” said

ADG (Operations) and Jharkhand Police Spokesperson SN Pradhan.

According to Pradhan, with this we are making an offer to the businessmen and contractors to let us about any such threat call or demand of levy by anybody, so that timely action could be taken in this regard.

“A helpline number will also be issued where complaints could be lodged by anybody which will be forwarded to the concerned SP and later to the police station directly so that swift action could be taken in this

regard,” said the ADG. “Companies and contractors involved in the developmental activities will also be provided adequate security cover by the police through this cell,” said Pradhan.

“Through the helpline number, it will make it easy for the victims to register their complaints over phone while sitting in their homes without getting into the knowledge of the Maoists,” added the official.

Sources in the police department also revealed that a roadmap was being prepared to bring the lagging developmental projects on track and people involved in the levy business could be traced out taking swift and effective action against them.

Moreover, it will also become easier for the police to get complaints against the extortionists on the basis of which immediate action could be taken in the right time.

Developmental projects like construction of roads, culverts and dams in the remote areas of the State are getting badly affected due to demand of levy made by the criminals and Maoists. If denied, they terrorise the contractors and businessmen by causing heavy damages and the construction equipments like heavy earthmovers and vehicles engaged in the construction activities forcing them to pay the levy amount. Several deaths of the contractors and the construction company employees have occurred in the last few years in the State.
