State Development Council members and Secretary of Vikas Bharti, Ashok Bhagat today appreciated the progress of women but bemoaned the fact that they were still being victimised. “Women are stepping up in every field, Stree Shakti Self-Help groups have been set up, Women have been allotted reservation in Panchayat but still they are being oppressed by none other than so called educated people. There is a clear lack of sensitivity towards women and men get jealous of their progress,” he said addressing Kasturba Gandhi Mahila Mahapanchayat organised here on Tuesday.
Bhagat urged people to take responsibility of social welfare and not depend only on Government. “Government can make rules. It can give facilities but the main responsibility lies with the society to implement the rules, to use the facilities. The problem doesn’t get solved with the ban of liquor, women organisations must ensure that liquor isn’t manufactured so that men don’t drink. The people have to ensure that the schools run properly and teachers teach properly. The Government and the Police have their limits. The society must also step up to the challenges,” he said.
Around 500 people including Mukhiya, Sarpanch, Prakhand Pramukh and Ward members attended the event whose main motive was to bring together the problems of women in front of the Government and find their solutions so that migration of women could be stopped. One Prakhand Pramukh, Pushpa Tirki said that women were still being exploited and their conditions couldn’t be improved just by discussions. They needed to be empowered and given proper education so that they could fight against their exploitation.
