Snatching incidents on rise in city

Incidents of chain, wallet and mobile snatching have been on the rise in the State capital. The snatching cases are being reported almost every passing day. In most cases, bikers gang either targets women or girls in desolated lanes. A majority of chain snatching incidents take place during afternoon and late evening hours in various busy localities of city.

To tackle the menace and increase vigilance in different locations like Circular Road, Harmu, Ratu Road, Doranda, Bariatu and others the police department is taking several initiatives.

The Ranchi Police have detected few sensitive areas in the city and has also deployed police personnel in different areas.

“We have identified certain sensitive areas in the city and regular patrolling is being conducted in all these areas. We have also deployed certain police personnel at specific places to combat the crime. Though few people report about the chain snatching cases but many people fear to approach police,” informed City SP Jaya Rai.

The snatchers do not have a specific pattern or location where they commit the crime. They generally choose remote areas and locations close to schools, temples, parks and residential areas.

Also, many of the offenders use stolen bikes and abandon them immediately after the crime.

“If police officials keep watch sensitive areas like schools, colleges and parks during the peak hours, the number of cases could drastically come down,” said a resident of Ashok Nagar, who has witnessed several incidents of chain snatching in her posh locality.

Similarly, another resident of lalpur, informed, “I have witnessed 4-5 cases of snatching in last three months in my locality and most of the cases registered with police are still pending. No one has been grabbed yet.”

local residents even fear to register complaints with the police. Few people even complain that, such incidents takes place because regular patrolling is not being conducted in residential areas.

“I have never seen any police van in my locality ever since I have shifted here four years back. It is a very busy locality and taking the advantage bikers gang commit such crimes,” informed Meenal Agarwal resident of Harmu Housing colony.
