'Smiling Sara' brings back self esteem, joy for Dumka women

The Dumka District Administration has embarked on a unique initiative to disengage women from selling liquor and encourage them to pick up more constructive works for their economic self dependence.

‘Smiling Sara’ — the drive started by the district administration is Inspired by one Sara Hansda, who once sold liquor, gave it up and is now a part of manufacturing of footwear at Balijor village, which is adopted by Dumka Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Kumar. The administration is planning to do the mapping of all such women who are engaged in selling liquor and find out their numbers.

Talking about the initiative Kumar said, “After the mapping we will try to convince them about the unsuitability of the trade to them and will find out ways to incorporate in constructive activities. The District Administration hopes to finish the mapping by mid February 2018. Post mapping through counselling and through awareness (IEC) convince them of the inappropriateness and unworthiness of the trade to them and persuade them to quit the trade.”

“The district administration will ensure their absorption and will provide avenues for more respectful living. For example some of them may be adjusted in footwear manufacturing in Balijor, where SHG women are the backbone and are earning their livelihood. Some may be observed in manufacturing of incensed sticks (Agarbatti), which is done on a large scale in Dumka district and has a large potential market in Dumka as well as in Deoghar but due to lack of proper branding and marketing the manufacturers have not been able to get proper market,” he said adding that the district administration has decided give a brand name Basuki to the incensed sticks and start its marketing. Some of the women may be engaged in small and cottage industries like fishery, honey, bamboo products, etc. The list is just illustrative and there are many avenues where they may switch over.

Kumar said that women like Sara are a source of inspiration for everyone and other females too should come forward and adopt a more decent and dignified profession. He assured that the District Administration is accessible 24x7 and will provide all possible help and support to them.
