Smart bins to ensure real time monitoring of Garbage disposal

The Ranchi Municipal Corporation’s new waste management programme is all set to become smart. Smart bins for easy accessing and monitoring of waste in the city are the prime attraction of the new waste management project RMC is planning to undertake.

While cleanliness has been government’s prime objective in its Swachh Bharat Abhiyan since 2014, the Capital city still holds a position of 46 in the list of clean cities of India released by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affair recently this year.

Ranchi has near about 25 to 30 smaller dump yards within the city apart from the 30-acre dump yard of the state capital in Jhiri. These smaller dump yards and non regularised collection of waste are the major factors in turning the city into a trash bowl. “We have identified near about 75 spots in the city where we can set up the smart bins to completely wipe out the problem of these small dump yards, “said Deputy Mayor Sanjeev Vijaywargiya.

The smart bins are small units to be placed at multiple spots in the city where individuals as well as garbage collecting vehicles can dump their garbage. These technologically-enabled bins will be monitored by the central system and will ensure regular collection of garbage from the bins.

“The financial status of the project will be finalised within this week and the request for proposal will be floated thereafter,” told the Deputy Mayor. “Accountability is another critical issue with the public and we plan to appoint one staff at each smart bin station so that there is proper disposal of garbage without littering,” he further added.

The smart bin system is a part of the bigger project RMC plans to undertake. The three-fold system of addressing waste management includes three important check points, namely door to door household, Mini Transfer Station (MTS) and Jhiri. Programmes for all the three checkpoints will ensure a collective approach to waste management.

Two types of bins for dry and wet waste for the households, smart bins to ease and facilitate the work of MTS and a grand project for the beautification and management of waste at Jhiri are components of the project.

The bins for door to door households are also expected to be tech enabled so that the garbage collectors can be monitored and held accountable for everyday collection of garbage from houses.

At Jhiri, garbage can be used to yield biogas, manure or recycled material.

“The promotion of private organisations like kabadi.com and enforcing the rules after we have channelled out the system of waste disposal for the city will prove to be fruitful too,” Vijaywargiya said.
