Political leaders across the party line believe that polythene cannot be fully eradicated from the society unless an alternative is provided to the people by the government. Co-operation from both the sides- government and the society is needed to get rid of polythene. leaders were expressing their views at a seminar ‘Polythene Hatao- Paryavaran Bachao’ organized at the MlA hostel auditorium at Jharkhand Assembly at the occasion of last day of polythene eradication drive of the state government.
“Polythene has gone so deep inside our life-styles that it is hard to eradicate fully from our lives as we have to implement the laws forcefully which are made by the government,” said Jharkhand Assembly Speaker CP Singh. He said, “We need to give directions to the programmes we are holding on the daily basis to get rid of polythene”.
Singh also announced that he will start a drive where people carrying vegetables in polythene bags at vegetable markets will be insisted on to use keep carry bags with them. Carry bags made of clothes will also be distributed among those who are spotted carrying polythene bags at the vegetable markets.
Expressing his views, save environment activist Saryu Roy was also of the opinion that one sided drive to eradicate polythene will not do, both government and the society will have to take active participation for the cause. “We should not only find ways to eradicate polythene but measures also need to be taken from the government side to dispose the used polythene present in the environment,” said Roy.
He was also of the opinion that the production of polythene must be kept restricted by the government as it cannot be banned out of a sudden given the fact that it is used for various other purposes other than making carry bags. Moreover, thickness of 40 microns could not be measured by bare hands hence, it is important that people must be made aware of the bad effects of polythene on the environment.
