City-based Society for Promotion of Professional Excellence and Kolkata’s Take 5 Communications will organise short first festival Shorts 2015 from November 28. The two-day festival will be organised at Centre for Excellence.
A total of 23 films would be screened this year, the duration of each film ranges from 2 minutes to 30 minutes; languages being Hindi, English, Bengali, Punjabi and silent films. There is a film in foreign language as well, in Arabic. Fifteen out of the 23 films are from Jamshedpur.
Tathagat Bhattacharjee of Take 5 Communications said that the purpose of the festival has always been to showcase the creative works of budding and student film makers especially from Jharkhand and give them a platform thus enabling them to move forward in film making. Screening works of professional film makers help the amateur ones to learn and set goals for themselves. Over the years ‘SHORTS’ has transformed many first –timers into professional film makers who are today working in different parts of the country. The success of this festival has nurtured a whole new bunch of very talented film makers here in Jamshedpur and they are experimenting with burning issues in their films.
Apart from films by regular film makers what has been encouraging for the festival right from its inception is the participation of Educational Institutions with their student films. The trend continues this year as well with la Martiniere for Boys, a leading school of Kolkata, participating with their student film Through The Prism and there is the city’s Karim City College of Mass Communication which is there with their film U.S.P.
One of Jamshedpur’s leading schools DBMS English School is also a participant with their film Nobody’s Child. Jihad (by Tathagata Bhattacherjee), Mind Matters (by Abhishek Ganguli), Bondhu (by Debajyoti Batabyal), Hatasha (by Kiron Mukherjee), Khwahish (by Md. Nizam) and R.I.P. Maggie (by Saurabh Suman Jha) are some of the films made by professionals.
The festival began in Jamshedpur in 2008 and was the first ever short film festival for the steel city becoming an annual event thereon thanks to the overwhelming response from the People and the Press and this year is in its 8th edition steadily marching towards a decade.
