The police in a joint operation with the CRPF have stepped up vigil in Nawadih block of Bokaro district following a sudden spike in Maoist activities and coal smuggling in and around the area. The Bermo police and CRPF have been carrying out intensive combing operations in Khasmahal, Kudi, Palamu, Sonapani, Tetriabeda, Barai and Doabad, said SDPO Raj Kumar Mehta.

The security forces have been warned of possible Maoist attacks, keeping them on their toes.

The Naxals have been trying to reclaim a foothold in the area for sometime. The police have recently held a series of operations in Nawadih block and the upperghat area. They are penetrating deep into the jungles in order to keep the rebels on the move. The police is aiming to either engage the Naxals in an encounter or keep them on the move.

The Naxals could plan attacks if they were allowed to settle down in a place, said YS Ramesh Bokaro Superin-

tendent of Police.

However, Naxals are avoiding a fight with the personnel as the latter is well prepared during such operations, said SDPO, Raj Kumar Mehta.

Speaking to The Pioneer the SP said that the ultras

were losing their ground in Bokaro zone and their top leaders were being arrested due to vital information provided by the rural folks to

the police.
