Schools to remain shut today as rain lashes capital

Published on:

Class till Std VIII of all schools will remain suspended on Wednesday due to continuous rainfall over the State at least for the last four days. Due to continuous rains for the last 48 hours, life went out of gear in the city and people preferred to remain in their homes with little attendance in schools and colleges.

looking at the requests made by the parents and the problems faced by children in reaching their schools, the district administration directed the school authorities to suspend classes till class eight on Tuesday.

“Classes in all schools, government and private, till class VIII will remain suspended on Wednesday,” stated an official release issued by the district administration.

Remarkably, 10 cm of rainfall was received in Ranchi in the last 24 hours resulting into water logging in most of the low lying areas throwing life completely out of gear. Several schools preferred to remain closed on Tuesday and those which were remained open witnessed thin attendance and the roads in Ranchi also remained deserted with very few people on it.

Dozens of bridges and culverts got washed out in the heavy downpour and many houses were also got damaged due to heavy rains.

Connectivity to Sail City broke down following a diversion leading towards Sail City in New Pundag in Ranchi was washed away on Tuesday. An attempt to repair the diversion by the district administration also got failed as the flow of water was very strong. One house in Dhurwa under Ward 42 also caved in on Tuesday as it could not withstand the downpour.

A tree also got uprooted near BJP office on Harmu Road due to which traffic on one of the lanes of the road remained obstructed for several hours. Traffic near the official residence of Deputy Commissioner also remained obstructed for several hours after a tree fell on the road.

Several areas on the outskirts of Ranchi suffered water logging where most of the houses remained flooded for the whole day.

Incidentally, Ranchi has received more than 10 cm water in the last four days following cyclonic circulation developed in the Bay of Bengal resulting into regular downpour in most the districts of the State. The State was 23 per cent rain deficit before four days which has not exceeded up to 5 per cent during these four days which is likely to get covered in the next 48 hours.

“Monsoon will be active for the next two days in the Bay of Bengal having its effect on several areas of the State,” said State Meteorological Department Director BK Mandal.

Following incessant rains in the area, three houses in Pithoria, one in Sonahatu and four in Budmu blocks in Ranchi got demolished while Silli-Pogra Road got washed away disconnecting on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, incessant rains posed a threat to a cold storage constructed last year at Boreya on the capital outskirts. If it caves in, it may lead to leakage of ammonia gas used in it.

looking at such a possibility, a team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been roped in to deal with any exigency and the district administration has also been keeping a close eye on situation.
