School girls tie handmade Rakhi to cop

Published on:

About half a dozen girl students of the Boon Public school at Japla headed by their principal Sauvari Mukherjee today reached Hussainabad police station and tied Rakhis on the wrist of the officer in charge of this police station Ajay Singh.

This walking down of the girls for the Rakshabandhan ceremony may look a very prosaic happening, but just a few years ago, girls and women had a dread of naxals and the police both and preferred staying away from them in Palamu.

Guardians too would have spent all their energies not to allow their girls to visit police stations then. Today it has all changed.

Sauvari Mukherjee who is from Kolkata and is the principal of the Boon Public School Japla said there was one Muslim girl too who also tied Rakhi to the cop. She said her students have handmade the Rakhis with the unused and discarded household items like wool, pearls, chiffon etc.

Mukherjee said her students have even sent Rakhis by speed post to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

Police officer Ajay Singh said it was a pleasant experience to see girls coming over to the police station with Rakhis.

Singh said, “We gave them toffees and cash worth rupees 1,000 in the group.”

The police officer said the girls have been assured of all care and concern of the police for their convenience and comfort on the streets.
