Scholars studying climate change impact on PTR

Published on:

The two researchers from the Central University Jharkhand are doing research on the impact of climate change at Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR).

One of the two is a Vinita doing her doctoral thesis on the impact of climate change on this tiger reserve.

The other person is working on the anti fire plan in this tiger reserve as from March to June till the rain comes this tiger reserve faces high incidence of surface fire most.

Confirming this DFO Core Anil Kumar Mishra said, “About a year back we had requested the universities in the State like Central University Ranchi, V B University Hazaribagh, NP university Medininagar Forest Research Institute Dehradun and Wild life Institute of India Dehradun to send in their scholars to carry out research works in this tiger reserve.”

However, it is Central University Jharkhand which has taken the lead in the State as two of its scholars are doing the research works here now.

Mishra said, “Some time back three research scholars doing M Sc came in this tiger reserve from Forest Research Institute Dehradun and did work on the impact of climate change here.”

Tiger reserve has enormous scope for research Mishra added. Scholars may research on the fast dwindling population of the bison here in this tiger reserve as this Schedule I animal is on the verge of extinction.

Its number is below fifty and its population is restricted mostly in national park Betla.

DFO Core further said in 2015-16 some bison were located in Tunoo and Maromar areas of PTR.

Scholars can go for its study of status health population food habit copulation method survival tactic death cause and its rate and PTR will welcome research work on the bison most.

Research may be done on the issue of alternative habitat for the bison as just one disease animal cholera if it assaults bison can wipe out the entire population of it here.

Out of 39 tiger reserves in India bison is found in just seven to eight reserves including this PTR.

Sources said the State Government has never allocated any fund for research work to be done here in the PTR. DFO Core confirmed this.

The scholars who came here so far were given all facilities like accommodation access to information freedom of roaming inside outside the PTR reiterated the DFO Core.

The second most crucial topic of research is the impact of fire on the PTR as every year's summer fire devastates huge bio diversity here.

The PTR will like to have with it the copy of research work of the scholars for its future reference and benefit for the wild life here.

Wild life Protection Act  speaks about research work in tiger reserve. And for this the PTR extends great facilities. The PTR falls in tropical zone and has tropical seasons like winter summer rains and autumn.
