City reports minimal ragging cases at colleges and University levels but ragging and bullying cases at School level have emerged as a grave concern in recent days. The recent case of ragging at lala lajpat Rai Public School last week where four students of high school level were brutally beaten up by their seniors was a shocking one for the city.
The case of two students of the Sainik School in Tilaiya alleged of violent ragging at the school in past years was another incident highlighting the same .Though Police and School administration have taken serious steps against the culprits but it has raised questions on seriousness of schools regarding the implementation of anti-ragging rules in the school and safety of students in schools.
In most of the city schools, there are no separate anti-ragging committees functioning to redress students issues. Students are not aware of Anti-ragging laws. CCTV Cameras are also not installed in many of the schools to monitor student’s activities. After lala lajpat Rai School incident schools like Cambridge Public School are now putting up anti-ragging notices in the school.
“We are demanding anti-ragging committee in every school to protect children from ragging. There should be a committee to look after ragging or any other crime taking place inside school campus and management must be vigilant on the activities in the school premises by installing CCTV cameras in school campus,” said Ajay Rai, Secretary Abhibhawak Manch, Ranchi.
Ragging is not only prevailing in form of physical violence but also mental torture for materialistic possessions by senior students. “In my school our seniors had asked for expensive mobile phones and cash and they generally torture juniors mentally and physically if their demands are not fulfilled. We are really disturbed about all this,” said Rishabh Kumar (name changed) a student of Delhi Public School, Ranchi.
“We already have an anti-ragging committee which is formed before the beginning of new session every year to protect freshers from any kind torture. We are installing CCTV Camera in the school premises to keep a tab on the happenings of the school and to avoid any kind of nuisance and ragging,” said AK Singh, Principal of Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Ranchi.
