Ruling NDA, Opp clash over land Bill in House

Published on:

As expected both the ruling alliance and the Opposition parties inside the Assembly did their best to pull each other down within the little time they had on the inaugural of the Monsoon Session on Monday. The tempers could not be calmed even after Speaker Dinesh Oraon calling a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee where leaders of all parties including Chief Minister Raghubar Das and leader of Opposition Hemant Soren remained present.

Opposition leaders Hemant Soren and JVM’s Pradeep Yadav took aggressive line as soon as the House resumed after the break of the Budget Session. Moreover nothing changed in between as the contentious issue of land acquisition Bill, brought to fore by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Neelkant Singh Munda who introduced the Presidential assent given to it, triggered the chaos.

The Opposition demanding from the Government to recall the Act that made changes into the land Acquisition Act, 2013 pressed for fresh debate inside the House. The demand was vociferously rejected by the BJP members who questioned the legitimacy of doing that when the legislation was already passed by the House and assented by the President.

When the exchange of words persisted, the Speaker provided a chance to Hemant Soren to speak briefly on this subject but before he could start speaking the Chief Minister stood and questioned the ‘discussion’ being allowed after the set process for a Bill becoming law neared to completion.

The objection irked Hemant, who commenting on the CM, asked on whose permission he stood to speak and used some words which were later deleted from the reporting by the Speaker. Nevertheless, the exchanges stirred up the members of rival camps repeating the same old story the House is witnessing for last about two years. Soon the Speaker opted to read out the condolence messages and adjourned the proceeding till Tuesday.

later the issue remained the focal point inside the meeting as well where Hemant Soren and Pradeep Yadav demanded the provisions of the amended legislation be discussed to clarify whether those were against or for of the people of the State.

“The House is not his fiefdom. The CM has been asserting himself against the Opposition members and he did the same today. Our concern is the protection of tribal and farmers whose lands are at the stake with the changes done into the Act. Whole lot of people and organisations are up in arms. We would not allow the Government to continue with its whims and will fight this out from the House to streets,” said Hemant Soren. Pradeep Yadav briefly sat on dharna at the entrance demanding CBI probe into the horse trading charges leveled by JVM chief Babulal Marandi through a disclosure.

As per the schedule the Government is slated to present its first Supplementary Budget on Tuesday but looking at the stands of the Treasury and Opposition benches its passage is likely to be customary, sans any discussion.
